About Jose Luis Hernandez

Jose Luis' music-making is polished and informed by reflection on the affirming role that music can play in people’s lives.

Jose Luis is the founding director of Sistema Tulsa at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he is helping build an inspiring music education program for local underserved youth. On Oklahoma Arts Day, he accepted a citation of commendation on behalf of Sistema Tulsa and addressed the Oklahoma House of Representatives to promote the value of arts education. He holds degrees in music from Texas Christian University and the University of Texas Pan-American (M.M. in Orchestral Conducting). He was a Conducting Fellow at Bard College-Conservatory of Music and a Sistema Fellow at the New England Conservatory of Music. He completed “Leading Change in Education Systems,” a professional program of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He performs as a pianist and conductor, writes for local and national publications, and serves on various boards including Chamber Music Tulsa and the Oklahoma Arts Institute, the state's official school of the Arts. In 2022, he released his CD album "Piano Devotions" with the esteemed Albany Records.
